Problem

Due to increased levels of cyber attacks, the National Institute of Neurological Disorders and Stroke (NINDS) needed a complete security assessment of their information systems, including development of a comprehensive network security architecture. NINDS also wanted to establish a central point of control for all security issues and incident responses.

Resolution

LCG Systems conducted a comprehensive vulnerability assessment of NINDS’ systems and networks. After identifying and prioritizing critical information system resources, the team developed a comprehensive plan to address all security issues.  They implemented a defense-in-depth architecture across a campus network that included layered firewalls, intrusion detection/prevention systems with centralized management and reporting, centralized vulnerability scanning, centralized patch and antivirus management.

Value Added

LCG Systems reduced successful attacks on NINDS systems by 70% and reduced exposure to zero day attacks. Critical system uptime was improved by reducing system compromises and the team vastly increased the amount of information available to NINDS staff about network based attacks. The network security architecture provided actionable metrics to management on number and type of system vulnerabilities, repelled attacks and security system ROI.
